    Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3/4 cup
    Granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup
    Brown Sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    Ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp
    Ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup
    All-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp
    Lemon juice (to keep apples from browning)
  • 2 tbsp
    Unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 double pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

    Egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with lemon juice, then add the granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour. Mix well to coat the apples evenly.
  3. Roll out the bottom pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie pan. Spoon the apple filling into the crust and dot with small pieces of butter.
  4. Roll out the second crust and place it over the filling. Trim and crimp the edges to seal. Cut a few small slits on top to allow steam to escape.
  5. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
  6. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the edges brown too quickly, cover them with foil.
